What Is a Macro Split?

Macros (macronutrients) are the three main nutrient groups your body uses for energy and building blocks: protein, fat and carbohydrate. Your macro target is found by distributing your daily calorie target across these three groups.

Each macro has a different calorie value: 1 gram of protein and carbohydrate provides 4 kcal, while 1 gram of fat provides 9 kcal. Calxin divides your calorie target into grams of protein, fat and carbohydrate based on these values.

Protein is important for muscle repair and maintenance, fat for hormonal balance and basic functions, and carbohydrate for daily energy. The ideal split can vary with your goal, activity level and preferences.

How Is a Macro Split Calculated?

A macro split is found by distributing your daily calorie target across protein, fat and carbohydrate. The basis is that each macro has a different calorie value:

Calories per gram of each macro:

1 g protein = 4 kcal
1 g carbohydrate = 4 kcal
1 g fat = 9 kcal

Calxin's approach: protein and fat are set per kilogram, and the remaining calories go to carbohydrate.

Protein = (goal: gain ? 2.2 : 2.0) × weight
Fat = 0.9 × weight
Carbs = (remaining calories) / 4
