What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple measure based on the ratio between your height and weight. It shows the general range your weight falls into for your height and is a widely used indicator, also adopted by the World Health Organization.
It is calculated by dividing your weight by the square of your height. The result is assessed in four ranges: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–25 normal, 25–30 overweight, over 30 obese.
BMI is a practical indicator but cannot distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular person may have a high BMI yet still be healthy. To see your body composition more clearly, it is better to evaluate it together with measures such as body fat percentage or FFMI.
